A Tiny Sand Pit for Big Back-to-School Curiosity
August 15, 2026
The first weeks of school are made for questions. What built that little funnel in the sand? Why are its sides so steep? What is hiding at the bottom—and what happens when an ant steps too close?
Those questions are exactly why we love antlions. A simple dish of dry sand becomes a living lesson in animal behavior, habitats, engineering, patience, and predator–prey relationships. This year, we wanted to make that experience easier to bring to a desk, learning station, homeschool table, or curious kid's room.
Meet the Antlion Mini Den
The new Antlion Mini Den is our smallest ready-to-set-up habitat. Each Mini Den includes:
- a compact 10-ounce observation bowl,
- a premeasured bag of fine, dry sand,
- two guaranteed-live antlions, and
- our Artie care guide.
Pour in the sand, gently add the antlions, and give them a quiet place out of direct sunlight. Before long, students can begin watching for the cone-shaped pits that make antlions such remarkable hunters.
Bowl color varies based on availability.
Small habitat, real science
An antlion habitat does not need to be large to inspire careful observation. The Mini Den is especially useful for a science center, a small group, or a student who wants to follow the same animals over time.
Try asking students to keep a simple observation log:
- Sketch the sand before the antlions are added.
- Check the habitat at the same time each day.
- Measure or compare the pit openings.
- Write a hypothesis about why a pit changed.
- Record what happens during feeding.
There is no screen and no simulated result. Students are watching a real animal respond to its environment, and sometimes the most interesting observation is that nature did something they did not predict.
Back-to-school savings through September 30
To help teachers and families start the school year with a little more wonder, we are offering two back-to-school savings:
- Use code SCHOOL15 for 15% off our starter kits and the Antlion Class Project.
- Add Ant Lions and Lacewings to the same cart as an Antlion Class Project, and one copy of the book is automatically 50% off.
Both offers run through September 30, 2026. The book discount applies only when the book is purchased with an Antlion Class Project.
Start with curiosity
Whether you are planning a full classroom investigation or simply looking for a small living science experience, antlions give students something worth slowing down to notice. A little sand, a hidden predator, and one good question can open the door to weeks of discovery.
Here's to a school year full of close looking, thoughtful questions, and tiny surprises.
